The MEC commits to upholding these values for its residents and within the Cit\u00e9 by signing the <a href=\"https:\/\/etudiantscanadiens.org\/app\/uploads\/2025\/05\/charte_valeurs_ciup-3.pdf\">CIUP\u2019s Charter of Values<\/a> each year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:80px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"our-history\" class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container\">\n<div style=\"height:60px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-arimo-40-regular-font-size\">Our History<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The first foreign house of the CIUP, the Maison des \u00e9tudiants canadiens has almost 100 years of history. The MEC was inaugurated in 1926, one year after the Cit\u00e9 internationale universitaire de Paris was founded. It has already hosted great names such as Pierre Elliott Trudeau, Adrienne Clarkson, Jacques Parizeau, Louise Beaudoin, Gaston Miron, \u00c9mile Borduas and Alfred Pellan.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><strong>Discover the significant events of its history :<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n  <div class=\"timeline  \">\n        <div class=\"timeline__container  left animated__element animated__element-slide-left\">\n      <div class=\"content\">\n        <h2> <span>1926 <\/span><\/h2>\n        <p>Thanks to the efforts of High Commissioner Philippe Roy and the financial support of Senator Marcelin Wilson, the Maison des \u00e9tudiants canadiens is inaugurated on October 30, 1926. Many celebrities were present at the event, including the Prince of Wales, representing the British government, and the President of France. The MEC was the second house in the Cit\u00e9.<\/p>\n      <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n  \n\n      <div class=\"timeline__container  right animated__element animated__element-slide-right\">\n      <div class=\"content\">\n        <h2> <span>1937 &#8211; 1947 <\/span><\/h2>\n        <p>Many students leave the MEC during World War II. The Germans occupy the houses of the Cit\u00e9 internationale universitaire, including the Maison des \u00e9tudiants canadiens.<\/p>\n      <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n  \n\n      <div class=\"timeline__container  left animated__element animated__element-slide-left\">\n      <div class=\"content\">\n        <h2> <span>1948 &#8211; 1951 <\/span><\/h2>\n        <p>Canadian students were once again welcomed as usual.<\/p>\n      <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n  \n\n      <div class=\"timeline__container  right animated__element animated__element-slide-right\">\n      <div class=\"content\">\n        <h2> <span>1952 <\/span><\/h2>\n        <p>With the arrival of the new Director of the MEC, Lionel Lemay, cultural activities flourish in the house. Lionel Lemay welcomes numerous groups, actors and musicians. This cultural dynamism continues to this day.<\/p>\n      <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n  \n\n      <div class=\"timeline__container  left animated__element animated__element-slide-left\">\n      <div class=\"content\">\n        <h2> <span>1957 &#8211; 1958 <\/span><\/h2>\n        <p>Arrival of the first women in the House.<\/p>\n      <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n  \n\n      <div class=\"timeline__container  right animated__element animated__element-slide-right\">\n      <div class=\"content\">\n        <h2> <span>1967 &#8211; 1968 <\/span><\/h2>\n        <p>To secure its financial viability, the MEC undertakes an expansion. This allows it to double the number of rooms, and increase the shared spaces. <\/p>\n      <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n  \n\n      <div class=\"timeline__container  left animated__element animated__element-slide-left\">\n      <div class=\"content\">\n        <h2> <span>1984 &#8211; 1985 <\/span><\/h2>\n        <p>In 1984, the MEC closes for one year for major renovations. These take place thanks to the support of Jean P. W. Ostiguy, who was President of the Canadian Committee of the MEC, and who volunteered during many years of his life to support the House.<\/p>\n      <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n  \n\n      <div class=\"timeline__container  right animated__element animated__element-slide-right\">\n      <div class=\"content\">\n        <h2> <span>1987 &#8211; 1996 <\/span><\/h2>\n        <p>The MEC becomes increasingly popular and prestigious among Canadian students and those of other countries. The tradition of artistic and intellectual events expands even more.<\/p>\n      <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n  \n\n      <div class=\"timeline__container  left animated__element animated__element-slide-left\">\n      <div class=\"content\">\n        <h2> <span>2001 <\/span><\/h2>\n        <p>The MEC celebrates its 75th birthday. Jean P. W. Ostiguy passes the torch of the presidency of the Canadian Committee to Robert Panet-Raymond.<\/p>\n      <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n  \n\n      <div class=\"timeline__container  right animated__element animated__element-slide-right\">\n      <div class=\"content\">\n        <h2> <span>2003 &#8211; 2005 <\/span><\/h2>\n        <p>A new renovation project for the Maison. Sanitary facilities are being installed in all rooms and studios,<\/p>\n      <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n  \n\n      <div class=\"timeline__container  left animated__element animated__element-slide-left\">\n      <div class=\"content\">\n        <h2> <span>2011 <\/span><\/h2>\n        <p>The MEC obtains the status of Fondation reconnue d&#8217;utilit\u00e9 publique (FRUP) in France.<\/p>\n      <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n  \n\n      <div class=\"timeline__container  right animated__element animated__element-slide-right\">\n      <div class=\"content\">\n        <h2> <span>2014 <\/span><\/h2>\n        <p>The house&#8217;s main corridor is transformed into Corrid&#8217;Art, hosting several exhibitions over the years.<\/p>\n      <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n  \n\n      <div class=\"timeline__container  left animated__element animated__element-slide-left\">\n      <div class=\"content\">\n        <h2> <span>2016 <\/span><\/h2>\n        <p>MEC celebrates its 90th anniversary with a series of cultural and commemorative activities in Paris, France, and in Montreal and Toronto, Canada.<\/p>\n      <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n  \n\n      <div class=\"timeline__container  right animated__element animated__element-slide-right\">\n      <div class=\"content\">\n        <h2> <span>2020 <\/span><\/h2>\n        <p>From September 2020 onwards, 80 residents, including brews, remained confined within the house. A COVID protocol was followed. The 5th floor was reserved for infected students, while the other residents kept busy with various activities organized by other students. It was a wonderful time of solidarity and mutual support between the residents.<\/p>\n      <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n  \n\n      <div class=\"timeline__container  left animated__element animated__element-slide-left\">\n      <div class=\"content\">\n        <h2> <span>2021 <\/span><\/h2>\n        <p>The MEC marks its 95th anniversary alongside special guests. A special commemorative volume is released for the occasion.<\/p>\n      <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n  \n\n      <div class=\"timeline__container  right animated__element animated__element-slide-right\">\n      <div class=\"content\">\n        <h2> <span>2024 <\/span><\/h2>\n        <p>The house was also at the heart of this memorable moment. The Olympic Committee privatized a wing and stayed for six weeks, from July to August. The MEC was delighted to welcome the athletes&#8217; families and friends, as well as the women&#8217;s rowing team, who were awarded the silver medal.<\/p>\n      <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n  \n\n      <div class=\"timeline__container  left animated__element animated__element-slide-left\">\n      <div class=\"content\">\n        <h2> <span>2025 <\/span><\/h2>\n        <p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=NI-_9Wyl9s0\"><img width=\"300\" height=\"210\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5885 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/etudiantscanadiens.org\/app\/uploads\/2025\/11\/inauguration-prendre-position.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This year, the CIUP is preparing for its centenary, and the MEC is not on the sidelines of this major event.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/etudiantscanadiens.org\/en\/official-launch-of-the-mecavenir-fundraising-campaign-and-renovation-project\/\">The MECAvenir Renovation Project and Major Fundraising Campaign launch<\/a> represent the start of a new era for the House.<\/p>\n<p>In September 2025, the inauguration of the \u201cPrendre Position\u201d project marks the installation of 47 poetic chairs throughout the park, a collective artwork celebrating the identity of each House and the spirit of connection that characterizes the campus.<\/p>\n      <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n  \n\n      <div class=\"timeline__container  right animated__element animated__element-slide-right\">\n      <div class=\"content\">\n        <h2> <span>2026 <\/span><\/h2>\n        <p>MEC celebrates 100 years of existence.
